Well the skydive was the most incredible thing I've ever done in my life!!! We were picked up from the hostel at 4, (an hour late- which didn't help the nerves!) and drove over to the skydiving club. There we were briefed on how to jump out of the plane and the correct position for the fall. They'd sorted out our order in advance, and I was last which meant a long wait! I wanted to get it over and done with, but actually it worked out for the best as it meant Mel and I got the sunset flight and drive. When our turn came we were harnessed up, and climbed into the tiny plane (with our two tandem masters, and two camera men). The flight took about 40m, to get to 10,000 feet and all to quickly the pilot was shouting 'three minute warning'- I think that was the moment when I really realised what I was doing! Mel was by the door, so she was going first and suddenly the door was open and she was in the doorway and gone. Then my tandem master (Crazy Paul) was pushing my into the doorway. I had to sit there with my legs tucked under the plane, and he rocked back and pushed us both out. The first couple of seconds of the freefall were absolute sheer terror, but then your brain catches up with you and you realise how incredible what you're doing is! We had a view of the town of Swakopmund, the dessert and Spitzkope and the sun setting over the ocean. The 30 second freefall which took us down to 5,000 feet was over far too quickly, and then the parachute was opened and we slowed right down. It took us about five minutes to fall the remaining five thousand feet, and then it was all over (apart from watching back the DVDs). That night we all went out for a celebratory meal (springbok steaks) to celebrate one of the highlights of the trip. After all that worry, I can't wait to skydive again! Tommorrow- quad biking.
