We still had to train Raffa and Luisa but lucky for me and Michelle they had pretty much got it so we spent our first field shift basking in the morning sun...bliss! Today has been pretty standard but we have done enrichments for the elephants tonight. Tonight they have pellets soaked in water and molasus and then rolled in leaves to make a ball. I got out of the start of it when the pellets were at their soggiest as Laurie wanted me to learn how to do the buckets which we hang up above their pens. I watched it last week and they bang them with their trunks to get the pellets out. The pellets go everywhere! Thato, the baby, is the daintiest eater out of all of them. She puts her trunk to the whole in the bucket and sucks them out. While Joan and I were putting the straw in the buckets a bird kept flying in and nicking the straw. At first I thought I wasn't putting it in properly and the straw was just falling out!
We're doing Night Observation tomorrow and had to pick out our shifts from a bowl to make sure all was fair. I'm doing the 2-3.30am shift which is probably the most annoying out of all of them as I won't get a decent night sleep either side but it means I get a lie in. I'm really excited about it though! We have been told to keep an eye on Keisha as she's been swaying quite violently in her pen and they might need to move her to another one that isn't on the outside. Other than that we just observe when they get up, how long they are up for and what they do.
I went out for the first time tonight. It was definitely a tale of two halves! Charlotte was persuaded to join me, Abi, Johanna, Catherine, Clara, Catherine's bf Chris, Christoph, Andrew who works at the park as a guide, and David. I was a bit wary of Andrew as I'd heard from Joan and the girls that he's not very good with the elephants although really good with people. It turned out not to be a problem as I spent most of my night having a laugh with Clara and Abi.
We went to somewhere called the "Surf Cafe" which wasn't really near the beach at all, just by a gas station! Wednesday night is live mic night which was dominantly a very good looking South African guy. I've been quite disappointed by the "talent" here to be fair until I went to Surf Cafe. It is full of surfers! Amazing! Abi and I were singing along to a lot of the songs and got an appreciative shout out by the South African guy. There was also his friend Matthew who did his own rap which was hilarious. Despite having to get up at 6am tomorrow, we started with cocktails with shots following. They all had shots with baileys and condensed milk in them leaving me with tequila. The first one was ok but the second one was definitely a struggle. David was trying to make us play his "Dealer Rules" game; the one which involves us grabbing our boobs when we see a queen. None of us wanted to do that in public and just ignored him! When the bill came, I paid for mine and he paid for everyone elses! I think that made it quite clear we weren't great friends!
We left Surf Cafe and walked "2minutes" to the club 'Flashbacks'. It seemed to take forever to walk and it was all uphill. When we eventually got there it was dead! No one was there. It was a shame but the German girls say that it is full on Fridays and Saturdays. We went home pretty much after we arrived and there was more money troubles with David as he accused me of owing him money for the taxi to town. I wasn't even in his taxi! He is always complaining about the fact that he doesn't have any money yet he buys loads of food to cook for us and then he goes around paying for all the drinks....except mine! Oh well, we'll see how it goes. He's only here till Monday.
