Salvador, a beautiful but dangerous place. We read if we were going to be mugged anywhere in Brazil it was here (we survived!) It's known for preserving its African heritage from the slave trade back when the Portuguese settled. It is a great melting pot of different cultures. You couldn't possibly identify a specific Brazilian look here.
The trip started off well with our taxi driver from the airport not speaking a word of English but able to sing word for word John Legend's All Of Me. We stayed in Open house Barra an arty hostel in a safe neighbourhood. 5 minutes from the beaches and bronzed Brazilians who loved a good selfie. Still too early to get the top off, the beach body is still recovering from Christmas and the Mozzarella jibes of Sicily.
We headed out to the historic district known as the Pelo for a day. Here you see the mix of African culture, grand churches and array of colourful buildings. Being such keen travellers we used trip advisor to find a restaurant, only to go down a back alley and be warned by a local that it was too dangerous. Warning duly noted, we managed to find a local place selling steak which blew our daily budget but was worth it.
The nightlife is a bit non-existent in salvador, everyone hits the beach, drink with friends in the day, then head home. It's been just what we need with a few early nights (lads on tour) after a few days of hectic travel.
Now a choppy 2 hour ferry ride to Morro do São Paolo to look forward too and a few days on a party island...
