We wanted to go surfing in Mossel Bay because we'd heard there were several good spots, however, once we got there the weather decided to be pants and it was too cold to get into the water without thick wetsuits. Unfortunately we had also messed up our buses and had to stay for three days. The first hotel we tried was a converted train on the beach, and by converted I mean simply moved 10ft off the railway line. The place brought horrible memories of the early morning commute to London so we quickly checked out and moved somewhere slightly less crappy for the remaining time. Still we wouldn't recommend the place!
Eventually we managed to escape Mossel Bay and got to Stellenbosch. We did a wine tour of the area, which is really pretty but more like the south of France than Africa. After 20 glasses of different wines we were still pretty clueless but it was fun nonetheless.
After Stellenbosch we got to Cape Town. A very cool place. We did all the touristy things: Table Mountain, Roben Island, Warner Beach, Area 6 etc. People in Cape Town are very friendly and relaxed, and there are loads of people busking and dancing in the street which was very cool. Also, the taxi drivers had meters, yay! You can't understand how much we appreciated that after three months of haggling over fares!
We were staying on the trendy Long Street and I got offered lots of drugs everytime we went out; that hadn't happen for at least a couple of weeks and I was wondering whether I no longer looked like the type. It happened to me all the time in India and the other African places we've been. That makes the area sound a bit seedy but it really wasn't and we went out to a couple of cool bars while we were there. We also really randomly found ourselves sitting at the next table to Helen's sister in a restaurant one night. Small world!
