After a 12 hour flight spent squinting at our mini TV screens we emerged in the land of Oz, dazed and slightly confused but excited none the less. We had arranged a pick up with the hostel we were staying with, the 'Jolly Swagman' (sadly not actaully in a boat) but there was no one to meet us at the airport. After making sure it wasn't all a dream and we weren't still in Africa, Jack ran about the airport making phone calls whilst I guarded the bags (i.e. after no sleep for 28hrs I had the temprement of a pitbull!!)
Anyhows, finally found the bloke who was a right arse and tried to charge us to put our surf boards in the bus because apparently they were a 'deadly weapon' (someone tell Bin Laden quick) so not such a great start after all. To top it off it started to rain in the land of sunshine and didn't stop for the next week.
Not all was lost however, as we coped with the jet lag pretty well and were able to wander about the city doing tourist-type things, only then realising that things like a Starbucks coffee actually cost the normal price (in fact like 20p more) which was a shock to the pocket. Whilst I'm on the subject though, the worst thing HAS to be the chocolate - 1 pound 50p for a standard Snickers... outrageous!
Feeling the newly enforced lifestyle diet coming on, we contemplated our options with travel, and decided the most economical choice would be to rent a camper to drive up the coast. We searched through a few companies but all required bonds on credit we didn't have, so were left with only one comany with one van - ominous, maybe....
Yep, turns out it wasn't the one in the picture on their lovely leaflet, but a Toyota from the 80s which didn't have a roof rack or CD player or nice smell like the others did. After some general moody looks and whinging, they offered to add the former two features for free whilst we waited, and bribed us with money - smelt like roses after that!!
So then we finally set off on our Auzzie adventure...
