It was so amazing to get to Belize because they speak ENGLISH, not any kind of English either, but of 'da Carribean mon'. Needless to say many awful 'beeeer-can' impressions ensued. Anyhow, we'd heard about some caves around the area containing Mayan pottery and possible sacrificial human remains, and morbid fascination lured us in. Sadly, Belize was hit by massive floods which caused problems for thousands of people, and affected most of the roads (luckily the bus drivers just ploughed on through). Needless to say these usually semi-submerged caves were out of the question, but we made the most of our time by embracing the water levels and doing a tour of the impressive waterfalls instead.
It was just the two of us with our guide, who chatted to us about his previous work, including at a nearby hotel owned by Francis Ford Copolla, where he took round many visiting celebs including Nicholas Cage and Cameron Diaz amongst others (sadly no interesting gossip though!!). He was really great and took us into one of the smaller caves to look at some pottery, even though we hadn't planned on it and had to climb through tiny cracks with a wind up torch and flip flops. Was such a wicked experience though... minus the huge spiders. To cool off afterwards we headed to a swimming hole formed at the base of a huge waterfall, which was total paradise. Definately the best introduction to Belize we could have hoped for.
