From San Ignacio we drove/floated along the country's only highway, currently being used as a fishing area, to Dangriga. It was a nasty little place so we got out of there quick and went south to Placencia. There was very little to do there as it is essentially just a village on the beach - there aren't even any roads! We basically just wandered around and looked at all the knock off merchandice on offer. Inspecting some 'Nike' hats, realistically priced at $2.50, we saw a cool one with two 3D scorpions on it. Reaching across and giving them a poke gave us a bit of a shock as the promptly ran away into the rest of the hats; our second close shave with scorpions so far.
Up from Placencia to Belize City, no longer the capital but still the biggest city. Lets just say we could see why the civil servants all packed up and shifted elsewhere. It did have a pretty cool zoo with some wierd animals from out here but the atmosphere of the city left a lot to be desired. I didn't really appreciate the wasted tramps refering to me as "oi, white boy".
Anyway, after the disappointing cities of Belize we took a ferry offshore to the island of Caye Caulker. The island sits on the world's second largest reef system and has the typical carribbean white sands and blue sea so we were pretty chuffed. We did a snorkling tour out to the reef and I have to say it was the most amazing snorkling I've ever done. There were hardly any boats out on the reef, it was really cheap, and there were more fish in one space than I've seen anywhere. Just a few of the things we swam with: nurse sharks, sting rays, eagle rays, turtles, flat fish... We even got to touch the sharks and sting rays, no Steve Irwin incidents though!
