The ferry trip was very calm and coming into South Island was spectacular. Saw a swarm of fishes very near the surface and wondered if something was chasing them..
Picton was looking at its best with bright clear skies and a crisp breeze setting the flags snapping and putting white caps on the waves. Stopped for lunch at a cafe overlooking the beach and had a glass of Moa 5 hop ale...very nice!! Back to the station to catch the train but instead of the fancy new carriages, we were in the old ones, circa 1970. There was a viewing platform right at the back tho and I spent a couple of hours watching the scenery flash past...lots of wineries, pink salt flats and I saw seals basking on rocks not 20 metres from the train!
We were a little late arriving into Christchurch but Lisa was there to meet me. We dropped my stuff off at her house driving around some of the city centre on the way. So much devastation, it looked like a war zone. Empty houses, half wrecked and abandoned, so many empty lots, the heart of the city had been ripped out. 37 seconds was all it took. Life is coming back..the cardboard cathedral is taking shape and the spirit of the kiwis is still there..we had supper in a container thai...literally a container as a kitchen, an old caravan as a serving hatch and picnic benches..very good and very popular!!
Met up with Ben, my nephew who is travelling anf in Christchurch at the moment..he's looking well and has fallen in love with New Zealand...and a New Zealand girl by the sound of things,
Lovely to go and sleep in a lovely bed in a lovely room...all by myself!
