We faffed our way through Venice today. Took the shuttle from campsite to bus station, where you take a monorail called the People Mover to near the Grand Canal. Went to get tickets to Croatia for tomorrow at the station, then realised we didn't have our Interrail tickets, and didn't know where they were. We had to take a bus back to the campsite where, thankfully, we found them in our tent. Got back into Venice, went to station, and were told by a disgruntled ticket office worker that there are no trains to Croatia from Venice.
Found an Internet café and found that we would have to get a night train to Croatia. By now it was afternoon and we hadn't touched Venice. Decided to come back later, and entered Europe's biggest maze, trying to find St Mark's Square. Eventually found it and went up the bell tower for panoramic views at the top. No stairs, just a big lift.
Got to the bottom and had ice cream, then went into St Mark's Basilica. Free entry, but you had to pay to see the altar up close or visit 'the treasure'. We saw the choir galleries, and the whole ceiling and lots of the walls are decorated with gold leaf. It's quite dingy and faded inside, but still impressive.
Walked round the back of the Basilica and took photos of the Bridge of Sighs, and saw lots of gondolas on the canal. Then we walked back to the station, trying to follow signs that stop suddenly. We had to wander a bit, but we came across a free museum of Vivaldi period instruments, where the clarinets were all set up completely wrong (Anna spotted this and was irritated by it).
Got to the station, and after a big faff managed to get a bus ride to Villach in Austria, and then a train from there to Zagreb in Croatia. The big plan is to go from Zagreb to Split on the train, take the ferry to Supetar on Brač Island and spend some time at Zlatni Rat, Croatia's best beach.
Now we are at Venice's oldest Pizzeria having excellent margherita pizzas. Venice is very hot and extremely humid, but there's a lot of shade in all the side streets.
