Another busy day in Rome. First we bought our train tickets to Venice for tomorrow, then went to the Colosseum. A bit of a queue, and more tour guides trying to get you on their tours, but we got in as EU citizens for a reduced price of 7€50. One ticket gets you into the Colosseum, Palatine and Forum. Colosseum is a lot of walking, but as ruins go, it's one of the most impressive sites. The first floor interior is a museum of the site's history, and has among other things, recovered bones of animals found there.
Short walk to Palatine, a large area of gardens with ongoing archaeological projects to uncover ancient Rome. This joins on to the ruins of the Roman Forum, where there are lots of arches and columns, an original 4th century bronze door, and lots of dust. Our feet are covered in it. Good shower needed tonight. We got very hot walking round there, but there were several drinking water fountains around the site.
We briefly visited the Opera Theatre, but nothing was happening and the exterior wasn't as exciting as the map made it out to be. We had another ice cream outside here, then went to see the Trevi Fountain. The fountains are my favourite thing about Rome, and this one is the biggest and best. Very touristy, and security guards with whistles to stop you from touching the water. Still my favourite thing in Rome. This is what is in the picture.
Short walk to the Spanish Steps, another tourist site with lots of steps leading up to a big white church. Got some photos from the top, then went to a pizzeria for dinner. Very good pizzas, tiramisu and fruit salad. Got a litre of coke for less than the price of 2 small drinks. Went back to campsite to book Venice campsite and watch the football.
