One week ago, we were packing up to leave Darwin, and here we are, 3000km later, basking in the sun at the Whitsundays! We're happy to have hit the coast after roasting in 40 degree heat from Katherine all the way to Charters Towers - we were even longing to be back in the Darwin humidity and storms rather than the dry, scorching heat of the outback! But, thanks to Toyota airconditioning, we had a good drive across starting early in the morning and stopping late in the day to avoid the heat of the day. We had an enjoyable stop at the historic Daly Waters Pub for a refreshing cider which was wonderful. This place is usually packed with tourists, but now that the wet season is approaching, it was deserted. On the way, it's funny to see the termite mounds on the side of the highway dressed in various forms of attire from bras to T-shirts and work clothes! People have obviously been very creative
We arrived at Airlie Beach on Thursday, tired and hot from our trip across, but not sure where to stay, so decided to splash out and stay at a 'Big 4' caravan park (our first 'flashy' caravan park stay), and you wouldn't believe it, but they had a 21st birthday special for this month - all powered sites $21 per night!!! Wow! So, a 4 night booking and we've had a wonderful time enjoying an amazing pool with waterslides, mini-golf (Alf beat me overall) and sites surrounded by grass and palm trees - our own little oasis! Yesterday we treated ourselves to a boat trip on the 'Big Fury' around the Whitsunday Islands, visiting Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling at a coral reef - looking like 'bananas in pyjamas' in our 'stinger suits'! A great day out.
So we'll continue heading down the coast, each day getting closer to home!
