Having managed to only just get accommodation here, due to it being so busy we didnt mind spending only one night in Surfers. We had heard mixed reviews but wanted to check it out for ourselves. Our hostel, Aquarius Backpackers, was a little way out of town in an area called Southport. It was nice and clean, with a pool, bar and cinema area, so couldnt complain (other than having to pay $32 a night each). Wanting to make the most of our stay we left our bags in our room and jumped on the shuttle into town. We had a wander around before heading for the beach. It was so built up and crazy to see the skyscapers go right up to the beach. So close that the beach is in shadow after about 4pm.
The beach was nice and the waves were massive. We both went for a swim but it was quite tiring fighting against the tide and waves so didnt last long. We relaxed on the beach for a bit, people watching, before heading into town again to get a few bits for dinner and have a look around. With 45mins to kill before our hostel shuttle picked us up Alex went back in the sea for another dip.
Surfers is pretty much a party town and there is someting on every night. Back at our hostel everyone was getting ready to party, but we, wanting to save our pennies and not really feeling like it, ate and sat in the lounge area watching films.
We weren't really that impressed by Surfers as it was a party town full of 18 year olds but it was good to see and one night was definitely enough.
Next stop Byron and we're both excited to get there and see what its like.
