When we heard the announcement that we had arrived at long beach we were a bit confused because the boat just stopped in the middle of the Ocean. But then a smaller boat pulled up, we loaded ourselves and our bags onboard and headed for the resort.
It took about 15 minutes on the smaller boat to get there but when we arrived we were greeted by one of the women who worked there, she explained all the activities that were available and gave us some good news - we were being upgraded from the dorm to a double seafront bure (Fijian hut). We had some lunch, a caserole type dish with rice, then went for a walk up the beach. The resort was named Long Beach after the really long beach there, suprisingly enough! The sea was such a beautiful colour we couldn't resist a swim. The rest of the aftrenoon we just chilled, reading our books in hammocks on the beach. I didnt have a book so was reading Alex's Jamie Carragher autobiography?!?
The Island only has electricity for a few hours in the evening, but there was a problem with the generator so we ate dinner in the dark then just headed back to the room to watch a film on the laptop.
In the morning we decided to do one of the activities on offer. We walked to the local village about 20 minutes away. We had a look around the church and the school. It was amazing as we were allowed to interact with the children in their reccess, then we were invited into one of their lessons. The lesson was social studies, the children were learning about rural and urban areas, we helped them out a little, then they wanted to show us some of the songs they had learnt in school. Back at Long Beach we settled into our new routine of chilling in the hammocks and on the beach, broken up by the odd bit of snorkelling. We had made good friends the guide who showed us around the village in the morning, so after dinner we had a bit of a jam session with the guitar, whilst one of the other guests was playing the ukalaily - not sure of the spelling, but the little guitar (you know what we mean). Then our guide showed us some really cool card tricks, before we hit the sack, unfortunately relegated to the dorm because there was space in there for us tonight.
The following morning we decided to make the most of the cheap activities because we had heard the other islands were much more expensive. So after breakfast Alex went on a fishing trip with one of the guys in our dorm and I had a 30 minute massage. After my massage I just chilled on the beach reading Al's book, which I was actually getting quite into. Alex was back in time for lunch, and for him that included some of the fish he had just caught! As we left on the small boat, heading towards the Yasawa flyer the staff at Long Beach all sang a farewell song for us.
We were sad to be leaving Long Beach but at the same time were excited to see what Waylailai had to offer.
