After roughly 20 hours of flying, we're finally in Europe!! We landed in Frankfurt at 6am local time, yesterday. We were all a bit surprised to be told that the temperatures we could expect would be 35-40 degrees. Celsius. Considering that most of us had packed for around 15-25, this was very shocking, to say the least.
I had a real German pretzel at the airport. It tasted kind of like a really salty, tough doughnut. But it was good.
After we left the airport, it was foggy and drizzly for most of the day, which meant that it didn't actually get to the 35 degrees we were dreading.
We went on a bus ride down the Rine, one of Germany's main rivers, to a little village, where we stopped to get something to eat. Not very much was open at that time of morning (around 9.15am). So we went to a pub and had nachos. The salsa was from a bottle and the cheese was microwaveable. It tasted strangely good, though.
After that, went on a cruise down the river Rine. The river is 1,230km long, so we only went 3 stops.
We then went back to Frankfurt to take a guided bus tour, which was actually very interesting.
We then went and checked into our hotel. I'm not going to say that I'm incredibly impressed with it, but for one night, it's okay. It's mustard and black n the outside, horridly asymmetrical, and unpleasant and orange on the inside.
We went out to dinner at a local German restaurant, where we had tomato soup, another soup with potato and sausage and vegetables in it, and ice cream and strawberries for dessert.
It started raining on our way back to the bus, when we went to the hotel.
It's still light here at 10pm and the sun comes up at 2am, so it's very different to home.
We're off to Switzerland tomorrow, to go to the Montreux jazz festival. (6.5 hour bus ride for the win!)
