One very eventful flight from Gatwick to Dubai - which included a 1 and a half hour delay due to patches of "weather" ?! And a full on fist fight complete with tomato juice slung everywhere between a mother while holding a baby and looking after 4 others and the man in front of her about him putting back his chair. We sat next to a nice Spanish lady on her way to Mauritius. The next flight wasn't as exciting/entertaining and mostly involved sleep but we ended up in the Maldives!
The airport is a strip of reclaimed land and is therefore just long enough for one plane to land - which gives something to watch on the front of plane camera. Maldives is also the lowest country in the world and everything is flat and the sea is literally on your doorstep. We found our Kurumba resort rep quickly and followed them to a big posh white boat. We opted to sit outside and ended realising why noone else did as it was a bumpy ride - not good for bony bums!
Once we arrived at Kurumba island aka paradise we were ushered into a check in room with big squashy chairs and offered coconut ice cream. Emily wasn't that impressed but actually this place was so posh they filled in your check in forms for you. Before being given the full scale tour Emily helpfully enquirer of we could have our free breakfast - and so we did. We gorged on everything from fresh fruit, fried rice, steak, pastrys and eggs. Delicious but once again a case of eyes too big for stomachs.
After breakfast we hopped on a golf buggy and was wizzed around the island to our room. Which was incredible. Massive - huge telly, complementary everything and an indoor outdoor bathroom. Wow. Pity we weren't actually staying the night! After a quick freshen up we had a walk round the island - which is tiny but beautiful - exactly what you imagine when you think tropical island. White sand, perfect palms and ridiculously blue water. Also people seem to serve you free bits of fruit and little glasses of juice throughout the day.
After wandering round the island seeing the sights including 8 different restaurants and an orchid garden we spent a little time on the beach and in the amazingly clear warm water. Unfortunately though our trip to the Maldives was over before we really begun and before we knew it we had to be back on the boat to the airport to catch our connecting flight to Colombo.
So all in all a crazy day setting a ridiculously high standard in terms of accommodation which will definitely NOT be met once we get to Sri Lanka and real life travelling.
