Hi Everyone,
No more diving news,I'm afraid (although I am hoping for just one more day trip before heading up to Kuala Lumpur for the trip home),but thought I'd just have a general burble.
I'm really surprised with Khao Lak,--it's actually quite a nice place to chill out.Although the large more modern developments are beginning to show their ugly faces, there is still a fair amount of the original Thailand around. The people are very friendly, and always willing to smile. The actual town/village is pretty typical of Thai tourist resorts, loads of restaurants and bars, with the inevitable souvenir shops in between. That said,on the seaward side is one of the finest beaches I have seen, golden sand that goes on for miles, and of course, those perfect Tropical sunsets, most days---the whole sky lighting up with shade of red---very pleasing to the soul.On the inland side is mostly Jungle with the odd rubber plantation thrown in.There's...erm? ... not exactly mountains, but pretty big hills, covered in Jungle. The pace of life is very laid back...trying to find a cup of coffee before 10 am is a bit of a task. The nice thing is,that despite all the tourists, most places close up around 10pm---no Ibiza all nighters!! although you can always find the odd bar that keeps going until the last customer leaves(example was last night...well OK...this morning...still suffering today!!).
The great thing is,that you can still have a brilliant time, even on a tight budget.....several local food restaurants, selling a substantial bowl of noodle or rice soup for around 60 pence----very,very tasty, and very filling. They haven't even gone the way of Indonesia...Westernising the food...if you don't like spicy food, find a European restaurant!! Needless to say,the spicier the better,as far as I'm concerned.
I think I may go through my piccies and see if I have enough land based shots to make up an album---I'm realising I'm a tad overkeen on the beastie pictures---but,after all, that was the main reason for this trip.
Only a week (today) to go,and I'm already thinking about my next trip,it's amazing how 3 months can fly by.Still,it's been great, and I have seen so many new things(admittedly mostly underwater)----it'll take me ages to organise all the pictures into some sort of sense.
Oh well, enough prattling,I hope everyone is well, and thanks very much for all those who have sent messages to this Blog---just wish I could figure how to reply to them!!
All the Best,
Alec.
