Day 7 - Hello Istanbul
We left the house in Sellians nice and early to make the drive back to the airport, return the car and catch our flight to Istanbul. We were following the car GPS but all of a sudden we ended up on the highway going the opposite direction to the airport. Turning around on the highway is near impossible so we drove a number of extra kms til we could take one of the exits. When we were finally back on track it decided to start raining. Now this wasn't just any rain this was full on torrential rain where we couldn't see anything - we thought it would be more dangerous to pull over than to keep driving. The rain was on and off all the way to the airport and it finally started hailing. Jayne was really being put to the test. You will be pleased to know however that we returned the car safely and we were all in one piece. Jayne let out a huge sigh of relief and claimed she could now relax.
I was concerned after all our shopping in Cannes that our bags would be over 15 kgs. Why I am concerned with the weight is - one of our internal Turkish flights states we can only have 15kgs of checked luggage. I decided I probably had about 16kgs while Jayne proclaimed to have 15.8kgs. While checking in I put my bag on the scale and it came up as 17.5kgs. Well this made Jayne's day and she started telling me I needed to get rid of 2.5kgs and seemed very proud of herself. Not sure why - as when she put her bag on it was over 18kgs. At this point I just lost it and was laughing my head off saying er Jayne you thought you were so good but your bag is heavier. The check in lady was laughing at us and thought we were hilarious. The flight to Istanbul on Turkish airlines was fairly uneventful. Getting out of the airport and finding our transfer on the other hand can only be described as hectic. There were people everywhere screaming names and holding signs for transfers. We had to do a lap up and down to actually find our names. It was very chaotic. Same goes for the roads in Turkey and the drivers are very fast! The hotel we are staying in is very cute and in a nice part of the old town. We have an apartment so it is a bit bigger and a lovely view of the sea from our room. We went and had some free drinks on the roof top terrace and there was a group of about 9 old ladies who were obviously doing a girls trip and they were trying to take selfies - it was hilarious. That will be all of us girls when we are that old! Jaynas and I then did a quick walk around the block to find a place for dinner and we found a nice rooftop terrace that served some excellent Turkish food - they gave us free entree (the bread was bigger than Jayne's head) and free dessert!
Excited to explore Istanbul tomorrow!
