Day 3 - Fancy in Fayence
We headed to Fayence to go to the markets - we were hoping that they were better than the ones at Seillans, as the town is bigger. We weren't disappointed. There were stalls with all different types of cheese, cold meats, fruit, jewellery, clothes and dips and olives. We went a bit crazy and bought a heap of things for our pre lunch meal. One of the shop owners loved us and let us try a whole heap of food from his store for free. It was delicious. He gave us this really yummy sun dried tomato dip/spread, olives, sun dried tomato, and a chunk of garlic that was sweetened so it didn't taste anything like garlic. It was a very interesting flavour as the sun dried tomato tasted more garlicky than the chunker of garlic. Walking around the town again we were a bit scared for our lives it is very hilly and the French drive crazy fast around the bends. We walked up to the top of the town for a lovely view of the surrounding towns and tried to do a lot of selfies. After that we went to the tourist office to see if the hike I planned between two towns was possible (information in English on hiking around France is very limited) and the lady didn't know what hike I was taking about so we asked her what hikes were local to Fayence. She drew the start point on a map for us and told us to follow the green and white and yellow markers. We managed to find the start of the walk and the markers aren't obtrusive but are actually very helpful in marking out the walk. There are just coloured lines on poles indicating the correct way and coloured crosses showing you what way not to go. It was a 6km walk which the recommended time was 2 hours but of course we smashed that in 1.5 and overtook some old people in the process. It was a little challenging at the start, first of all we walked in the hottest part of the day (midday as all of my walks seem to start) and there was a fair bit of up hill. The walk took us through some dirt tracks, some bush and we saw a lot of nice houses. By the end we were starving ready for our pre lunch meal back at the house. We definitely outdo ourselves with our pre lunch meal making every day. After lunch again we had a relaxing afternoon in the sun reading, followed by a headlamp walk into town for some dinner at chez Hugo. Jayne was skeptical about the chez but when we went inside there was a whole bunch of people and the food was delicious. There was an Australian couple next to us that we had a chat with who just bought a house in France and turns out the man grew up in Drummoyne! We also felt very inadequate as they were speaking fluent French. After dinner we headed home with our headlamps again and both Jayne and Hana recognised we would probably be dead without them so they were one of the best things I packed! Go me!
One thing I want to talk about that I wasn't expecting in France is the amount of wild life that has found it's way into our house. There was a frog waiting for us on our front step, we had wasps flying around inside the house, grubs in the shower and spiders. Hana is not scared of any of these things which is great as she will get rid of them - but interestingly enough out of all those things the grub scared her the most!
