Day 7...
Today I went to the Chalais market which was my first real experience of the town and a french market. It was a very good market in my eyes, a town half the size of my hometown with a market three times the size of the market that is usually at home. The french know how to do their markets! There was stalls for clothes, makeup, accessories and also FOOD, comme des crêpes (yummy) and frommage. Unfortunately I was reeled into tasting lots of different cheese by two optimistic frommageries.
However it was très très hot yesterday so everyone began to tidy up at around 12, which is vraiment bizarre pour moi. The whole town went dead silent, like a ghost town after 1! Myself and two other volunteers went to a coffee shop come second hand/antique store where we got refreshments, shade and I bought des cadeaux pour ma mère.
When we emerged looking for a place for some lunch it was as if a great disease had wiped out the population of the town. Nobody anywhere, la chaleur (the heat) now occupied wherever we walked.
A lively tapas place was much appreciated for lunch where we found delicieux roasted veg and skewered meat with fruit garnish. Excellent price, service, and taste, perfect for budgeted volunteers on a day out like us.
On arriving home I decided to change rooms as there was no shutters in mine and since there is a heatwave coming here, of over 40 degrees, it is necessary in order to sleep peacefully without over heating!
One of the truly resourceful and kind volunteers here organised a yoga class for us today and it was amazing ! We laid out under the rows of trees at the back of the house and the yoga teacher gave us an hour and a half of meditation and relaxed muscle stretches. It was just spectacular, so relaxing, and it was beautiful to just absorb the afternoon heat and really listen to the sounds of the wonderful french countryside !
It was my turn to cook last night and I did become a bit stressed when I began to cook. The pots here are tiny, It was très très different for me, but I adapted and also had a very handy sous chef to help me, grâce à dieu. Everyone seemed to throughly enjoy my mums chicken chorizo pasta so j'étais contente ! Cooking for 6 was a challenge I must admit.
I finished my day at La Giraudiere with learning how to play Settlers of Catane with two of the experience settlers players here, who went easy on me when I was learning but after the intro I am feeling strategic and ready for another few games.
À demain,
gros bisous,
Aisling x
