Tuesday was about all things fish! We manage to make it out of the apartment at 8 and head down to Doctors Gully to feed the fish. It is a phenomenon that started many years ago. The fish swim there at high tide and eat bread hand fed to them. We help ourself to slices of bread and stand in water up to our knees and feed mullet, queenfish, trevally, catfish, milkfish etc... There are hundreds of fish swimming around our feet. We trip over them when we try to move. The fish have a bit of competition on their hands as Emily develops a taste for the bread and rips pieces off as we hold it. The ultimate for her is when she sees a piece of bread floating in the water. Yum... Soggy bread! William loves it and wants to return the following day.
Mark then heads off on a fishing charter and the kiddies and I visit the botannic gardens. We enjoy a scone (best of the trip so far) and William cools off with a Frosty Fruit. Surprisingly Emily has one lick and wants nothing more to do with it. William and I play a game of 'keep your hat on' with Emily and lose. We do the rainforest walk as we know it will be shady. The palm trees are magnificent, tall and graceful. During WWII they were used for target practice by the military. We head towards the waterfall and surprisingly when we reach it we find that there isn't enough water for it to run. The gardens have lots of lovely old trees with low hanging branches that provide some lovely shade.
A slightly disappointed Mark returns from his fishing charter empty handed. No-one caught anything! We had been hoping to eat Marks catch for dinner but instead head to Cullen Bay in search of cooked fish. We eat at La Beach and enjoy some delicious fresh barramundi, chips and coleslaw. There is a face painter outside the restaurant and she turns William into a tiger. Afterwards we sit on the grass and the kids play while we watch a spectacular sunset.
We spend time shopping for a few things we need. The city is pretty touristy so we head to one of the local shopping centres for a few shops we know! Lots of people cycle here and they don't wear helmets.
Another day, another 32 degrees, the temperature never changes! We visit one of Darwin's free water parks. These are provided by the council as you can't swim in the beaches. This is a fabulous facility and William has an absolute ball. In the kiddies part alone there are 3 different slides, things to climb on, water cannons to squirt and much more. My favourite (and Williams least favourite) is the giant bucket that sits right at the top and fills with water until it loses balance and pours the water everywhere. Emily loves the feel of the water rushing over her feet at the bottom of the slides. William plays until his lips turn blue!
On Thursday we notice a few big clouds in the sky. It's still 32 degrees. We haven't seen clouds like this since we left Victoria. There is a 5% chance of rain but we don't see a drop.
Mark takes a deserved break and heads to the Darwin casino to make his fortune. It isn't to be this visit and so he returns and we enjoy some family time in the pool.
We visit several cafes during our stay in Darwin. We enjoy a yummy breakfast including baked eggs and house baked bread at The Moorish Cafe. The coffee is great. We have some yummy salads and pikelets at Rawgasm and it is reasonably priced but the salads are both missing ingredients and they forget a drink? We try some raw cakes at Karma Cafe and we can see why Trip Advisor votes it Darwin's best.
Tomorrow we check into a campground in Darwin, we were only going to stay 7 nights but the rodeo is on Saturday night so we will be hanging around a bit longer!
