Mark woke early and couldn't get back to sleep so got up and proceeded to pack up the tent around us and make breakfast for the road. Yep, he's a keeper!
So, we hit the road at 8 and drive for 2 hours. In that time we see 2 groups of brumbys, 2 small herds of cattle, a few birds, some grey nomads and several road trains, today we see our first 4 trailer road train - it's crazy how long these vehicles are! You see so few vehicles on the road that everybody waves as they pass.
So, after devouring the cheese toasties Mark has made, Emily sleeps and William chats non stop, even when he knows we can't hear him due to the Crowded House CD playing!
We spot some grass at Marla and so pull into the rest stop and place both kids on the grass as we have not seen any for a while and are unsure when we will see this rare green stuff again.
We drive on intending to stop at Kulgera for lunch. Emily is quiet, she appears to be resigned to spending a bit of time in the car and doesn't complain, she falls asleep before we reach Kulgera. It is a small dusty roadhouse where we pay $1.86 per litre of petrol. We drive on. We cross into the Northern Territory and stop at a rest stop when Emily wakes. It has red dirt and pepper trees. We have a quick late lunch while watching the road trains go by and swatting the flies.
We arrive in Alice Springs around 4:30 having covered around 680 km and check into a hotel. Time to treat ourselves!
We eat at the hotel restaurant (The Chifley) - Mark has kangaroo and I have citrus cured salmon - delicious! The menu has a bit of an Australian native thing going on and everything seems to have lemon myrtle and/or wattle seed in it. The kids eat all of their meals. Emily has her first desert - ice cream. She picks up a spoon and devours the lot!
