Today was AWESOME!
Why, you might ask? Well, it's because I had the perfect teaching day with the kids AND the adults. The whole thing trying to not sound like a hypocrite being relatively new (although I'm finding that I DO have some skills) and talking with teachers who have been in the biz for more years than I have been alive! It's a little, well, intimidating. Thankfully I had lots of support!
Janis came and we team taught today. It was a kick to be working WITH her instead of just soaking it all in. I worked with the kids and Janis would jump in when she wasn't working with the adults in the room that were there to observe all the great work the kids were sharing with us. It was a great day all around. One funny thing about the kids is that they don't usually use your last name to address you. You'll often hear "Miiiiister" or "Miiiister Aaron." Some caught on and called me "Miiiiister G," but it was always with the greatest accent!
After school we went to a small set of stores just outside the school grounds. They had all kinds of cool arts and crafts! We spent over an hour just looking at all the different things that they had for sale and I went nuts (not to worry, the school paid for it because they gave us a VERY generous stipend for food). It was a great thing too, because we were able to spread it around and really support the local economy. The crafts that the indigenous people in and around Medellin produce are absolutely incredible!
Then we headed down the street to a "typical" restaurant. YUM! We pigged out and celebrated one of the consultant's birthdays. Jody turned 40 and so we had cake and sang and had a great time! But again, we had the waiter confused and he brought someone else's french fries TO ME. I ordered a "mixed plate" and I just assumed it was part of the mix. Nope. So, of course, everyone had a great laugh at my expense, even me!
Then it was off to home to plan, in fact I have to get! I have not only a lesson for 2 1/2 hours with the kiddos (who I'm really getting attached to), I have a 90 minute lesson in a very unreliable computer lab with teachers. Nothing's started, because the idea to be in the lab was kinda short notice. More later, and wish me luck!!!
