Last Day in Africa - February 25, 2014
The last day for anything always makes me a bit melancholy--last day of school, last day at work, last day with long distance family or friends, and like today, last day of a wonderful adventure.
It has been great, really great. It has been challenging, mind-boggling, enlightening, terrific fun, and a pure, pure pleasure. We have learned so much, we have met so many wonderful people from many parts of the world, and we have enjoyed each other in a way that is almost impossible to do unless travels like this are undertaken together. For us, it truly is a knitting-together, bonding experience. Only we two have done this as we planned it, as we experienced it, together. We share so much.
We loved this last day. It perhaps was the most relaxed day of this 26 day adventure. We simply hopped on a bus and went to our favorite spot, Camps Bay. If we ever, ever live here, we would live in Camps Bay. The wind had calmed itself down a great deal from yesterday and last night, but it was still a force to be dealt with, nonetheless. We found a perfect spot on the beach, took some photos, relaxed a moment and then began to get pelted with sand!! Talk about exfoliation!! We moved up to the lawn and found it to be much more pleasant, no sand and only a little wind. It was very comfortable. I kept thinking about being on the beach in Florida and how still the air can be in summer and how hot the sun can bear down. Here we had intense sun but a dry, cool breeze--that is, once we got out of the blowing sand.
We had a lovely lunch of Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc and calamari at Paranga Restaurant on Victoria Road in Camps Bay where we met a lovely young couple from the US. Brian is on assignment from NYC for 2 months, launching a new market for event-marketing company. Nicole is in marketing with L'Ocitane, simply visiting Brian and like us, leaving tonight. We shared stories and laughed a lot. Having lunch with them was a treat.
Ok, that's the end for this delight. We are now packing, tidying the apartment and tying up loose ends before we have one last exceptional dinner on the V&A and then head home. Our plane is scheduled to leave just after midnight at 12:25 am, and we will arrive in ATL at about 8:30 pm tomorrow on February 26.
We truly look forward to seeing our daughters, granddaughter, other family members, neighbors, friends and our home. You all are the best. You are the reason we return home.
Farewell dear and beautiful Africa. We will see you again.
