Travel to Cape Town - February 18, 2014
Our last morning at Muchenge Lodge was relaxing, for once! We were scheduled to leave at 11 am. This gave us time to wake leisurely, pack our bags, have a nice breakfast with the remaining guests at the lodge and visit with Robert, the great conversationalist, engineer, pilot, craftsman, general jack-of-all-trades and general manager of the lodge. We said our good-byes and promised to return and then were driven to the Kisane airport where we had free Wi-Fi - who would have imagined!!! We boarded a Swaziland Airlink, a jet with 39 seats and headed to Johannesburg, Joberg as the locals call it.
We had a short layover in Joberg, and then boarded the South African Airways flight to Cape Town. All in all it was very pleasant but again, we covered significant territory - total travel time was about 5 hours. We arrived in Cape Town about 6:30 pm and were delighted to have a quick pickup and delivery to our nearby airport hotel, Hotel Verde. The hotel is new and designed around a totally green concept; devices to generate wind power, and LED lights. Electronic notices for "Do Not Disturb," and hotel and restaurant info and menus are on a TV site. There are no disposable plastic items. The only paper in the room is a small notepad, tissues and TP. It's very nice. I like the concept.
We showered, had a late dinner of pasta and salad and went to bed for a wonderful night's sleep. I think we have an accumulation of tired.
Today, Feb. 18, we will arrive at our apartment at the foot of the Victoria and Albert Waterfront (the V&A), and begin to get settled in for the week in Cape Town—our last one of this fabulous trip.
Later . . . a nice cab-ride to the apartment with a well-informed driver who told us about the area. Then we met Francois and Haynes (prounounced Ahh-nis), owner of the small but very comfortable and chic apartment we will call home for the next week. Views from our terrace are fantastic--the V&A to the left and Table Mountain to the right. The owners gave us all the basic info, suggestions of wonderful things to do, how to get around and preferred dining spots.
We dropped off our stuff and headed out for lunch, to buy bus tickets (operated much like Breeze Cards) and shop for staples for the house. We cooked a healthy dinner at home of Ostrich burgers, broccoli and salad,. Then we planned our activities for the next few days, Facetimed with Cody, and enjoyed an immensely nice evening.
