Adam - well, we made it the capital! Washington DC. First impressions: horrible and wet. Got dumped four blocks from the metro station at 6 o'clock in the morning, after ten hours of hellish sleeplessness on the Megabus. To be fair not DC's fault. Some tool (I call him Mahmoud) twittering s***e into his Blackberry for two hours before yanking his seat back and nearly breaking Amy's knees. Got half an hours sleep (Amy got pretty much none), during which the only major achievement was to pull my neck and shoulder. Then had to make our way to Union Station in ridiculous amounts of rain after finding out there wasn't a free shuttle after all. Then spent half the morning sat in Union Station arguing with British Gas (long story). Then got off at the wrong metro stop and had to double back for the shuttle to our hotel. Then got about four hours sleep in the hotel room and woke up to find three additional guests in our room. And by guests I mean cockroaches.
So not the best start, in short.
We're actually staying over the Potomac river in a town called Alexandria (about a ten minute drive from the metro) that used to be part of the District of Columbia (as in Washington DC) but got pinched back by Virginia. So we can add that to the list of states. Apart from the room change necessitated by the unwanted arrivals, not bad. Very close to an International House of Pancakes (IHOP) and a KFC. Job is a good one.
DC itself seems much better in the slighty clouded (but dry) sunshine. To be honest, other than the monuments etc, there isn't an awful lot there. Must be about the only city in the US where it is impossible to find a McDonalds, Starbucks or Subway (or any other place that sells food when you're starving). Its all about the serious business of running the country... all in all a good day.
Tomorrow will trawl around DC a little with our bags but mostly just waiting for another (yay) overnight bus ride to Charlotte, North Carolina. Heading South fast now - can't wait for the sun, sea and our cruise through the Southern states.
Adam x
PS - as an aside, our list of visited (and by visited I include driven through) states is getting impressive. List so far: New York, New Jersey, Conneticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia (not technically a state) and Virginia. Thats 7 states in less than 2 weeks! Will add North & South Carolina, Georgia and Florida by the weekend as well.
PPS - sorry to sound a whinge (sure you were all really feeling for us). We are having a fantastic time!
