Adam - so this is Charlotte. Not had chance to see an awful lot, what between recovering from the Megabus yesterday (from DC) and waiting around with our stuff for the Greyhound to Jacksonville.
Nonetheless, Charlotte is a proper American town. And a really nice place. We were somewhat unceremoniously dumped on the path outside the Transportation Centre (Megabus aren't ones for going above and beyond. But hey, it cost $5!) and had to get a bus through to our hotel on the outskirts. Downtown is how you imagine any American city - skyscrapers, hotels, office blocks, the odd sports stadium (NASCAR is the local obsession) but then you reach the suburbs and everything is cosy little tree lined streets with one-storey timber houses. Perfect. Its also a bit warmer which is perfect (after NY, Boston and DC) - a nice place to spend a day.
American advertising is very careful in its choice of words. For example, with retrospect our hotel clearly employed 'quiet' in the sense of 'there is nothing to do or see anywhere near this hotel', rather than 'peaceful and lacking in noise'. Exhibit (a) busy interstate right next door, exhibit (b) industrial railway just on other side of said interstate, with every train electing to sound its horn loudly and continuously as it passes the hotel. Finally, exhibit (c) - the prestige - it is directly (and I mean DIRECTLY) on the final approach flightpath for Charlotte International Airport. And it is a busy airport.
Still, when you're that knackered all you need is a hot shower and clean sheets. Sunshine State tomorrow!
