Monday 2nd November - ARRIVED IN KUNMING
Arrived about 6am, so early and a wee bit tired, didn't get as much sleep as I'd hoped. On arrival to the hostel, we were pleased to find there were beds free now, so we checked in straight away and went to bed. Slept till about 10-11ish, just what we needed.
Bumped into our friends from Holland, forgot they might still be here. Went for a local brekky, it's a tradition here to have a noodle soup, which comes with a small variety of small dishes that you add to the soup. The lady in the café showed us the order to add each extra dish and away we went. Was delicious, a little different to what we would normally have for brekky, but always looking at trying new things. They call it "LONG BRIDGE NOODLES".
Decided to go to the local park "Green Lake Park", a time to chill while catching up with diaries etc. On the way we had a stop off in the supermarket and only came away with a huge bundle of cakes, gotta be done!! MMMM delicious, but after a few, we started to feel sick - that'll teach us. The park was a great way to experience the typical Chinese culture. Local older people playing instruments together, the most beautiful sounding music, but can't say the same for the singing unfortunately, kinda sounded like cats, but they seemed to be enjoying it, so I guess it's good for here. Stopped on a bench near the water, where I took a nap, while Ad read up on the Lonely Planet for going forward. Such a chilled out spot. Other locals were strolling around, sitting with family and friends etc, it was a lovely place to relax. Left just as the sun was starting to go down.
On our return to our guesthouse, we stopped in the little park just outside, it was full of groups of locals playing cards and relaxing looking out over the little pond area, this park was a lot smaller than the other one, but still it was a nice place to visit. Unfortunately, you could not escape the sound of traffic, but it was still nice to walk around.
Had said to Ad earlier, when I was feeling a little sick, that I just fancied curling up in a dressing gown and slippers, watching a really good film and eating something with chips. Well I did quite get the dressing gown and slippers but I did manage to get a chicken sandwich with chips and sit down with our friends in a gorgeous comfortable seating area of the guesthouse and watch Castaway, was just what the doctor ordered. Perfect end to the day and afterwards we went to bed.
Tuesday 3rd November - TAI CHI IN THE PARK
Up about 9ish, the cleaning lady looked keen for us to leave the room so she could clean. So we took our time and finally got out. Saw some people doing Tai chi in the park, looked cool. Managed to take some pics and film odd bits, tempted to join in, but we were in a bit of a rush today.
Went looking for the K2 bus, which we'd been advised gets you to West Hill. Took ages to find it but when we finally did, it took us to a bus station, where we changed for another bus and arrived at West Hill around 12ish. As we trekked up it, not sure how long it'll take to reach the top, we were panicking about getting back in plenty of time to make our overnight train. The hill was fairly steep in places and consisted mostly of dirt tracks with trees around and not a whole lot to see. As we passed 2 hrs of trekking, we started to see a fairly good view, but being a slightly misty day, we did not feel it necessary to continue to the top. Lucky for us, we managed to pick up a car heading down with a nice chap and got a lift back to the bottom, where a bus was already waiting to go. YEHHH!!
The buses back were fairly quick and we were back in the hostel in no time. Straight on the web we booked our next hostel, checked emails etc, got so into it we were almost late leaving DOH!! Got a cab to train station and boarded our night train in perfect timing. Watched matrix and ate our pot noodles for dinner, then it was lights out and sweet dreams.
