Hi Kids
It's been a while, I know, we've had a string of one night shows along with bus rides of six to eight hours a day. We've had some long distances to travel and very little downtime or so it feels anyway, so I do apologize for the silence.
I try to think of things that will be interesting for you and realize that if I just talk about one theater after the other it will get pretty boring. Unless of course, we run into a place like the Colonial Theater in Pittsfield and then I might end up flapping on endlessly about how neat I think it is. Sorry, but I can't help it, I just find this sort of thing facinating, talking about theaters, especially the old ones. It's not that we haven't been in some wonderful theaters lately. The State in Sandusky OH, the Paramount in Aurora IL. and most recently the Rosza in Houghton were all very nice.
The Rosza, now there was an interesting place. Now I don't know if you've ever been to the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, commonly called the U P., but that is some isolated country up there. If you look at a map the Rosza is located in the town of Houghton, almost to the very tip top of the U P. on the point of land that looks like a dorsal fin sticking out into Lake Superior. That area feels so remote partly due to the fact that you can see HERDS of deer grazing in open fields in broad daylight, not a sight you would see in the Berkshires of MA. The joke here is that they are so far north that you have to go south to get to Canada....kinda true to a point. Houghton was an industry town, from the copper mines and from the shipping on the Great Lakes. It's now mainly known for being a college town, home to Michigan Tech and the Rosza is on their campus.
It's a gorgeous facility and the treated us very well....ie free food! But the crew was great and we had a wonderful audience, another one I wished we could have packed up and brought with us. So much fun to hear a crowd like that.
The tour bus we've been riding is actually out of Cheboygan MI so since we were going to pass right by there the owner of the company said we should drop by and say hello. So after George the bus driver picked up his mail on the U P side of the bridge we stopped in for pizza and beer. We didn't have a show that night so it was ok. As a matter of fact, the bus got a little on the rowdy side as people had imbibed a bit....but, we all needed that break.
And now we've come out of the wilderness of the north and are heading south again. We have a couple more dates in Michigan and then we head to Texas...Yee-haw! Or...ummm...something like that.
Don't be afraid to give me some feedback or ask questions...I'll try my best to answer them.
Be back soon
Glenn
