Cusco is an amazing city. At one end you have the historical importance of a city that was once the centre of the Inca empire, which stretched from Columbia in the North, to Argentina in the South. There are beautiful buildings, amazing ruins to walk around and so much history to take in. On the other hand it is the most touritsy place I think I have ever been. Touts everywhere trying to get you to buy something or have a drink in thier bar-which can come to our advantage when they are giving out free drinks tickets!
We arrived on the day of Corpus Christi-another festival in Peru. It involves many saints on floats being paraded around the city for good luck to all the population. It also involves lots of bands playing and lots of drinking-an amazing site!
Yesterday I went to look in the cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, the main square in the city. The cathedral has survived several earthquakes during the last 100 years and houses a huge painting of the last supper, with a guinea pig as the meal! We met some friends for dinner that night and they said that they were walking along the plaza when they saw a man crouched by a lamp post with his trousers around his ankles taking a s***...where on earth would you see this but in the navel of the world-as it´s called-yuck!
Today we left cusco for the Sacred Valley-an inca river basin which has many ruined cities within it. We visited the city of Pisca...home to many incas in the 1500´s up until the Spanish came to conquer the area, looting everthing, even the tombs where the Incas placed large amounts of gold and silver with thier kings and nobles so it could be taken on with them to the next life. We then ehaded to an Alpaca farm, where we learnt the difference between lamas and alpacas-basically size and type of coat! We also got to feed the baby lamas-so cute-check out the video when I get it on here. After this we stopped by a chicha bar-the local beer-brewed from corn....and also flavoured with strawberries-very palitable. We have decided that´s going to be our drink of choice when we get back to cusco after the Inca Trail...which we start tomorrow!!!!!
