It took a really long time to drive to Krakow which left us both tired out. Driving is tiring but for a control freak like me being a passenger is even more nail bitting. Obviously this isn't a reflection on Dave's driving; I could never criticise (well not in a blog!). Thankfully our campsite was very close to the tram station and was nice and clean. However, they couldn't decide which toilet block they wanted us to use and kept randomly locking and unlocking them; a bit strange.
Out first day in Krakow we spent exploring the town which is every bit as wonderful as I have been told. There are too many wonderful sights to rave about but one special aspect is that we seemed to have stumbled upon some kind of festival. The highlight of the festival was a light show projected on to the palace in the main square, which was accompanied by an orchestra. A fantastic evening and totally unexpected.
On the second day we went to the Salt mines which sounds a bit boring but it was quite entertaining; these mines have a number of Cathedrals inside them and some weird but wonderful sculptures of famous people and gnomes (these wern't so exciting, just a bit disturbing). So far we have found Poland to be very affordable but at 65zl the Salt mines were, all considered, a rip off (I really don't care if the sculptures were made by 4 miners and one carving took 70 years to complete, I was not paying an extra £4 to take a picture of it). I am not entirely convinced of the authenticity of some of the pieces; am I really to believe that in the 17th century miners stayed on after a 9 hour shift to carve little people out of salt? Little people that really do resemble Grumpy, Happy, Doc and Sleepy a little too well! Sorry about that rant, it is good really. Seriously, go and see for yourself.
Our last day in the area we went to Auschwitz which I am sure you can imagine was incredibly moving and I couldn't do it justice by describing it to you.
Scores in the tractor game to date:
