Not to much to write about today. For most of the day we went through the Panama Canal. Having been through locks before (I can't remember where exactly, but I've done it before) I knew it would be a long and somehwat boring process. What surprised me was how many people didn't understand how locks work. Even Noah was hazy on it. I think I explained it to about three students while I was standing out on the deck. There are web cams along the canal so people could actually watch the Explorer go through. I imagine this is even more boring than actually going through the locks.
The crew knew we'd all want to stay outside all day to watch the passing so they had a bbq cook-out of burgers and hot dogs for us for lunch. We were all glad to have some American comfort food.
In the evening we had the No-Talent Show. Putting this together was one of the last things I had to do as the Programming RD. The show was great fun. Two acts in particular reminded me why I like working with students. One guy came to the stage, he claimed to have missed the sound check so the audience would have to take turns listening to his iPod. He then asked us to pick either his journal or what he had in a tofurkey box. Of course we picked the tofurkey box. He then called for volunteers from the audience. A random assortment of students came up including one of our extended family members. They opened the box and read random slips of paper including receipts, ticket stubs, and other odds and ends. They all read these at the same time. It was totally odd, quirky, and fun. One of the nice things about all of these events on the ship is that the community is completely supportive and welcoming. No one booed at this or made fun of it. Everyone laughed in the spirit in which it was intended.
The other act I loved was a video a bunch of students did on the ship late at night. You can find it on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfHvlPiOGHs# I like the idea of students going all over the ship in the middle of the night to make the video. Plus there is a fun bit after the credits.
Overall a fun night of absurdity.
