This is a characature of the Devil which they call "Tio" (uncle). They never refer to him as the Devil and he is who they leave offerings to every Friday to bring good luck for riches and safety. They only pray to "Tio" while in the mountain, and then "God" upon exiting. They condsider themselves in hell or close to the Devil while in the mountain, so he is who they need to respect while mining.
