Once again woken up by those freaky crows! I was up and on the road by 7am, I wanted to get another quick hike in before leaving the area, so I stopped at Black Rocks, for a short but hilly 2 mile hike (High View). I once again had the desert to myself and the smell of the pine trees was invigorating and it sent me on my way to LA very refreshed.
I am honestly getting on well with this driving and I'm actually quite enjoying it, the 3 hour ride seemed to go really quickly and as I skirted round LA (which by the way has a horrible skyline, not a patch on Philly) Katy Perry's, California Girls came on my playlist, so I was singing along pretty loudly to that, I'm not ashamed to admit it :)
I arrived at my next Airbnb accommodation to be met by the owner Melodie. The house has a great location one block off Venice Beach and the room was as described "tiny and with a bike". The house is shared with Melodie (who is VERY environmentally conscious and from our brief conversation a little "out there") and it seems a couple of other Airbnb guests, one in the other spare room and one on the couch, this should be interesting. But for $45 a night, with a bike included (oh and I could do my laundry) its a total bargain.
After sorting out my stuff I headed down to Venice Beach boardwalk. Now I know this is where all the crazies hang out, but I was not expecting that crazy! It has to be THE best place ever for people watching (sorry Wildwood Boardwalk you just got beat). I spent the first hour trying to figure out whether all these weirdos walking around were really that weird or putting on a show, the conclusion was yup they were really that weird. Like the guy walking with a stick on his head with a water bottle hanging off the front (see photo). There was another trying to charge $2 for a photo with his small dog that he had dressed up for the occassion. I spent a good three hours just walking along the board walk looking at all the hippy artsy stands and people watching. I stopped at muscle beach (like everything else you had to pay to have a photo with the muscle guys) and watched some basketball at the Venice Beach League, great game the guys were super good, then moved onto the skatepark which was packed and right next door was graffiti wall where anyone should spray their designs. Venice beach was heaving, clearly Sunday is the main day for this scene.
