Final stop, Roma!
On day 1, we decided we'd see the Vatican, leaving the next day to wander round more of the city. Rather than being church-like, the Vatican was more like a palace with an art gallery and museums. The Sistine Chapel was crammed with people, which took away a little from the magnificence of the murals. From there we went round to St Peter's Square.
Italy played their second World Cup game this night, which we watched in a bar at the side of the river. From there, we walked to campo di fioro, an old market square which has lots of bars and restaurants. Despite Italy losing the match, the square was really busy, and was a good place to spend the night.
Day 2 was intense sight seeing. First stop; the colosseum, where we had a short tour telling us about the building and history of it. Next, the Panatine and Roman Forum, the site of Ancient Rome and the original heart of the city. It was amazing to see a place as old as this. After there, it was on to the trevi fountain (which is dry at the min!!) and then the pantheon where we stopped for a beer. After a quick change back at our digs, our final tourist stop was the Spanish steps. We had our last supper just down the road, lots of pasta and red wine to top off the whistle stop final week tour of Italy!
