We didn't arrive in Lake Garda until after 4pm so our first Italian experience was dinner in sirmione, a beautiful town inside castle walls on a peninsula in the lake.
Day two we spent at the poolside at our camp site and had a homemade meal of pasta and BBQ chicken. It was nice to take a day to catch our breath in amongst the picturesque surroundings.
Day three we went to Venice. Just like the postcards, and so busy with tourists! We got the water boat to the Rialto bridge and had lunch before wandering around the windy streets for a bit, and seeing the basilica in San Marco's square. Each narrow alleyway looked identical to the previous one, but it was fun to walk round and get a bit lost anyway. We also squeezed in a gondola trip before getting the train back to Verona! Much to our disappointment, our gondolier did not serenade us. And I still can't quite believe we made it through the whole Venice visit without a rendition of "just one cornetto."
In Verona, we briefly searched for Juliet's house, but gave up and had cocktails in a waterside bar when it seemed like we'd never get there. On our rush back to the train station (when we weren't looking!) we found Juliet's house. Unfortunately we were too late to spend any time, as the last direct train back to our digs was too soon!
We had dinner in a floating restaurant in Peschiera, some nice Italian wine, looking over the lake. Bella.
