Vikki: The last couple of days in Zagreb have been great. Starting with a drive up the country through many small narrow country roads - one lane wide with varying wild life on the roads including cows, donkeys and a turtle of all things, then arriving in Croatia's capital and biggest city Zagreb which is surprisingly untouristy and quiet. We've wandered the city streets, with many beautiful buildings and lots of monuments with horses, checked out the local market and swum in an outstanding lake, deep, clear and warm. I would have to say I have throughly enjoyed all of Croatia as I had hoped, and would highly recommend it as a destination. People are helpful, the countryside and beaches are beautiful and while there are lots of tourists it's not chaotic. I'm ever hopeful that the next couple of weeks will be the same, given we are out of the big cities.
Raj: Zagreb has been a pleasant surprise. Leaving the coastal beaches of Istria and Split behind, I wasn't sure what to expect in Croatia's capital. The city was fairly quite and easy going, completely unlike the larger European centres we've visited to date. The tram system works really well so we left the car at home to travel to the city, which has a lot of charm and unique architecture. It's still really hot inland, and today we enjoyed swimming in Lake Jarun. This has set us up nicely for Lake Bled, our next and only stop in Slovenia. Another highlight for me was tonight's dinner - roast chicken and potatoes, with fresh bread to scoop up the gravy - yum! While (so I'm told) I'm always thinking with my stomach, I haven't enjoyed a meal like this since we left NZ - thanks Vikki!
Harley: Yesterday we caught the tram into Zagreb. We saw a church and a clock. The clock stopped in an earthquake in 1880 on 9 November, at 7 hours 3 minutes and 3 seconds. Every day a cannon is fired at 12:00 and we watched it. First the church bells rung and then all of a sudden the cannon shot went off. It was so loud it gave everyone a massive fright (see our Video). To cool off we bought a ice cream box with 9 ice creams in it. We all ate 2 apart from my dad who ate 3! At the end of the day Anouk and I each bought an ornamental wooden flask. Today we drove to Lake Jarun. It is 2 km long and holds rowing championships. The water was very warm with quite a lot of fish. Beside us there was water skiing, loads of people fell off while doing it.
Anouk: Yesterday while we were in Zagreb my favourite highlight was hearing and seeing a cannon shooting out of a tower at 12pm. It was incredibly amazing seeing the cannon shoot. We shot some really cool videos of the church bells ringing and the cannon shooting so make sure that you check them out in our blog videos. Today down at Lake Jarun I enjoyed swimming and sitting in the water watching the little fish swim under my knees. When they swam under me it really tickled. When I swam out deep I couldn't see any fish because it was to blurry. It was very fun and enjoyable. I am excited to drive to our next city and country tomorrow which is Lake Bled in Slovenia.
