The day started in fog - most unseasonable. We are not impressed with the hotel - breakfast is even more limited today and neither of us had a good nights sleep on one of the worst mattresses imaginable - lumpy and you could feel the springs. Still, after checking out, we sallied forth to look round the sights of Vladimir. First stop was a monastery - except it turned out to be a museum of space travel and not a good one! After ditching that, we found that there was a walkway round the back of the town and it had wonderful views over the plain below - except it was still in fog. We went on to see a couple more churches - the second was the spectacular Cathedral of the Assumption which was amazingly decorated in side - all gold with lots of icons. It was in full use with lots of locals lighting candles and kissing icons. By this time the sun was burning off the fog and when we went outside we could see the view properly - there was a big river down there we didn't know existed. After seeing the other sights of the town (gates - closed today and water tower - now a museum with good views), we adjourned to a café and caught up on emails as they had free WiFi. After stocking up for the train journey at the local supermarket, we went down to the station for the train back to Moscow. We found the right window and used my best Russian to get 2 tickets - they were on the local train which was half the price of our train out from Moscow but no where near as comfortable. We got back to Moscow for a quick change of station and started looking for somewhere to eat as normally there have been lots of places round the station. There was not a restaurant inside just some dubious kebab booths. We grabbed some and got back inside the station quick as the area was really rough. There were lots of drunks and we got approached by down and outs 3 times in 2 minutes. It was then onto the train for the long journey East.
