We were moving on today to Vladimir (about 200km east) so we decided to make a leisurely day of it. Last night we heard the news about Matt & Cheryl's engagement - Fran was thrilled so had to get emails out before we could move on. (It was either this or the first plane home to start organising the wedding!). We then made our way to Kursk station and managed to get tickets at first attempt - impressed myself with my 6 words of Russian! The train was good - we were even given a free snack on board. We arrived at Vladimir early and, after a bit of orientation, followed the guide book that said our hotel was 200 yards away - what they omitted to say was that it was 200 yards horizontally and 100 yards up! Checked in - it had started to rain so we waited before exploring the town. The place is a bit different from Moscow - pavements are not maintained, everything seems more run down. It is a historic town (was the capital before 1600 after which it moved to Moscow & St. Petersburg). The rain abated so we went out to have a quick look round - couldn't find anywhere with an English menu so opted to eat in the hotel - not a good choice as the Russians don't do food hot! The food always seems to be luke warm when served, the same temperature as the beer in this case!
