We wanted to take the opportunity to see the Apline scenery as we left Italy and began to head North. We therefore booked two scenic tourist trains for our journey across Switzerland. The first was the Bernina Express which leaves Tirano and travels through the Swiss Alps along the Rhaetian Railway which is a World Heritage Site. The scenery is amazing and the engineering to get the train up through the mountains is very impressive. It was a really beautiful and relaxing trip to the Swiss town of Chur.
Switzerland is beautful. Switzerland is also expensive. We stayed in a pretty grotty hostel with no air con. It was hot and the team was tired so after lunch we headed to the library where we sat for 3 hours reading and chilling out. The kids have had their kindles but they have missed books and they devoured the English books in the library. A kebab was the evening meal.
The next day we caught the Glacier Express from Chur to Brig. Again really spectacular views as we travelled through the Rhine Gorge and up to the Oberalp Pass. We had spearate seats and met some really nice people on the four hour train journey and the kids were all really well behaved. We left the train at Brig and caught the train to Aigle where we met our friends the Tweedies for a few days to actually explore the Alps.
