Leaving Budapest we caught a very busy train to Vienna, no seat reservation meant a couple of hours on the floor in the doorways. After a quick visit to a playground in Vienna we caught our train to Villach. A town on the border of Austria and Italy. As we travelled in we got our first glimpse of dramatic Apline scenery.
We had planned our visit to Villach to coincide with Kirchtag, an annual traditional folk festival. Think lots of lederhosen and sausages. We went out on arrival and had beer, kirchtagssuppe, reindling and wurst. The next day we continued the Evison tradition of going up a mountain. This time we got a pretty pricey cable car and then chair lift. At the top we could see absolutely nothing through the clouds and rain. So we bought very expensive pizza and went back down the chair lift. Kids did some trampolining before we headed down. We got caught in a big downpour next to the Ossiacher See before heading back to Villach.
The rain abated allowing us to head out to the funfair. Lots of rides and the youngest is absolutely fearless demanding to go on all the scariest rides. It was good fun.
On our final day Steve and C had a leisurely visit to the park and cafes and a stroll along the River Drave. The boys and Alison hired bikes and cycled 12k to Silbersee and back. A pretty lake with wading and fish watching.
Villach and the surrounding areas are beautiful. The festival was nice to go to and everyone seemed to be having fun, the Villach folk can put their booze away. Overall it was a nice couple of days. Now we're off to Italia.
