Last Official Day
We split up after breakfast with women going to Flora Ser, a facility for abused girls and men heading out to meet some fishermen. The safe house was set up just 3 years ago and has already been improved and renovated. There are few social services in Mazatlan, so they rely on donations. As a source of income, they are now offering self-help workshops to businesses and agencies. The workshops have become quite popular and have helped to improve cash flow for the group. We presented donations from the Grande Prairie Sunrise and Swan City Rotary clubs as well as private money.
Once everyone re-grouped at the hotel, we went to deliver the tanker and ambulance to the Bomberos Veteranos. They also received radios from Morad Communications in Edson and fire equipment from the Fort McMurray and Woodlands County fire departments. All the equipment was cleaned up and carefully displayed for our visit. After many photos, we left Mazatlan for lunch in El Quelite.
El Quelite is a small town about 35 km from Mazatlan. The president of the Mazatlan Norte club met us there for lunch as it is his home town and that of his wife. They presented certificates to all of the Canadians before leaving for his mother's birthday mass.
We arrived back at the hotel with 2 hours to prepare for dinner and pack, then back on the bus to eat again. We had a delicious, final dinner with some of our Mexican friends with more photos and farewell hugs. Another memorable trip to Mazatlan has nearly concluded.
Tomorrow is off to the airport early. We will talk again once we arrive in Canada. Hasta Luego.
