Today is New Year's Eve (at the time of the writing we have already turned the page to the new year) - the whole reason we came to the Island. I wanted to receive the year in warmer weather, close to the ocean, and be able to ring in the New Year with some sort of celebration.
After some research I found Tybee Island - a charming little Island off the coast of Goergia. South enough that we could potentially have really warm weather, but north enough that we can comfortably get home in two days. A beach, a pier, a campground, and Fireworks to ring in the new year - perfect.
A cold front came through and instead of temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s - we had temperatures in the mid to high 50s. Yesterday with the breeze it felt cooler, even though we had sunshine. Today is partly cloudy or maybe mostly, but there is no wind so it actually feels warmer. It is not exactly what I hoped for, but it is much better than the really cold temperatures back home. I can still wear flip flops in this temperature and that is good enough for me.
We slept in again and after breakfast we put together gingerbread houses. When our masterpeices were completed we decided to head out to the Marine Science Center and check out the Turtle talk. After almost 3 miles on our bikes, we arrived at the center to find out it had closed early today. Disappointed we strolled the streets for a little bit. We then sat on the swings on the shore looking out at the ocean watching the boats leave the channel imagining what adventures would await them out in the open sea. It was a lovely time we had to reflect on life, dreams, and adventures.
Hungry for lunch we rode back closer to the campground where we met Gil for lunch and then went back to the RV to relax until we wanted to head back to the pier.
Later in the night we went to the peir and strolled the streets as we peeked in the bars and restaurants where the celebration had begun with music, dancing or karaoke. As the time got closer to midnight we walked to the shore and found a nice spot to put down our blanquet. We sat on the sand waiting for the stroke of midnight - our countdown was interrupted with the sound of the fireworks. It was a really nice show and we were so close it seemed they were going to fall on us on the way down.
Happy 2017 - may this New Year bring many more adventures...
