Olgiy to UB Camp 1
Off we go into the wilderness the idea is to follow the northern route to U-B. Jeez this is tough the roads are either so rocky you bounce from rock to rock or they're covered in sand so the front is all over the road. First let me get my excuses out of the way, I've never ridden in sand before so this is tough the big problem is I've no idea what to do. The first section was not too bad but following the river crossing it turned almost entirely to sand. We'd heard that the sides of the road could be firmer so Colin set off to try it with me following Mistake! The sand wasn't firmer it was deep and soft I fell off getting the bike up the bank at the side of the road then instead of using my common sense and turning back I then promptly fell off when I tried to use my front brake further across what turned out to be the beach of the nearby lake. Apparently "Front brake bad, back brake good, no brakes better" is lesson 1. The second time the bike went over it pushed my leg round while my toe was stuck in the sand as the bike came down the rear footrest fell directly onto my ankle, a great accolade to the boots that aside from a few marks on the plastic both they and me are still in one piece. I then spent the rest of the ride paddling along trying to get up enough speed so the front would grip. Only consolation, if you can call it that, is that most other guys had similar incidents and no-one was hurt.
