Pretty excited today to head out of the city. It's always interesting to see the countryside.
We get up early and catch the 8am Metro then a connecting regional train at 8.36 to Montserrat Monastery (48km west of city) The weather has been so warm 24-28 degrees so we were surprised when we go to the little hillside village that it was only 16 degrees.
Everything is green here and quite a lot of bush. Still lots of apartment buildings located in the regional area. You don't realise how lucky or privileged we are to have a whole house!
To get the monastery we take a cable car directly up. We get above the cloud and see the monastery right against the rocky outcrops called the serrated mountains. It sits 1200m high. A spectacular setting. Since we are above the clouds it's now beautiful and sunny and quite hot!
We walk to he highest point (10k round trip). Hard to describe this setting. A highlight of our trip. The mountain peak, the monastery nestled in against the mountain. A very spiritual place, beautiful church.
I didn't realise there was a small museum here but decided to head inside and was blown away. In one room was originals of Renoir, Monet, Descartes, Picasso and a room dedicated to Dali. An unexpected surprise! I discovered that Montserat was a sanctuary not only for Nuns and Monks but for artists, poets and scholars after the Spanish civil war.
After Montserrat we train back to Barcelona directly to the beach for a swim and early evening tapas overlooking the marina. Everyone is on a high - quite a spectacular day and evening!
