Late start as chatted with two English couples over brekky, both retired and on motor bikes.
Trip un-eventful, rode through Milan off peak - still no fast Porches or Audis behind me, but kept a good pace up.
The road from Torino towards France (A 32/E 70) was outstanding followed a valley between towering mountains that were in the clouds...Again Italians love their tunnels, many long ones today. Then turned off motorway on the S24 towards the French border, strangely only a 70 km per hour speed limit.
Again got waved through the border...
Stopped at one of the most beautiful cols ever- the Col d Lautaret. Lots of bikers and chatted to some. One an Italian on a GS 800 wanted his picture taken with me and hugged me like a long lost friend. From this Col you can ride another famous col- the Col d Galibier, a smaller road it looked too busy with camper vans and other vehicles to have any appeal.
Was now getting close to 6 pm - said to self would look at the first camp site that I came across. Only a few km later came into La Grave, and checked into the first campsite. Next to an alpine stream and the mountain vista is the Massif de Ecrins, which has several 4000 metre peaks, several +3500 metre peaks and a Glacier! At almost 1498 metres it will be my highest camp site in a long time. Although no bar or wi fi as La Grave is a Alpine / Ski town plenty of choice, besides one cant have everything. Used my stove for first time to cook dinner and ate beside the stream under the huge Massif.
La Grave is close to the famous Alp d'Huez of Tdf fame, will try to hire a bike and ride it...as pretty close and I am making good progress back to the Pyrenees (have appointment on Sat).
