After 6 days in Rio and partying for carnival it was time to relax and head to Paraty, a beautiful colonial town roughly 4 hours south.
With valentines day in mind and my meticulous planning we arrived at the bus station to find there were no buses for at least 3 hours. Cue waiting around in an overcrowded hot bus station, who says romance is dead. When we finally arrived in Paraty I did make up for it and we went for a tasty Thai meal at the originally named Thai Brasil (Still not 100% convinced by Brazilian food). It was also still carnival but we managed to miss the famous mud festival, not my fault honest, and compared to Rio it was pretty tame and family friendly so we gave it a miss.
Paraty has an old historical centre with cobbled streets (that are break an ankle dangerous) and whitewashed buildings. We stayed at an airbnb apartment just a small walk outside the centre which was a welcome change from the cramped Rio hostel.
Whilst we were there the weather wasn't great and it rained a fair bit but we decided to try and do a tour. There are waterfalls nearby which you can visit and actually slide down them. However, these were sadly fully booked so we settled on a boat trip around the islands and remote beaches (hardly Sophie's choice). The tour itself was good with plenty of snorkelling and beach stop offs, the only problem being the guide only spoke Portuguese. My knowledge of hello and thank you wasn't cutting it and luckily someone else helped translate, all in all definitely worth it.
We had previously planned to go to Florianopolis for a couple of days but due to carnival all the buses were fully booked. We therefore settled on heading to Trindade, a beach town set in the Atlantic rain forest.
