Once we reached Itacare it felt like we had finally arrived in Brazil. At our Hostel Bananas, we met the owner Pete who had a pony tail longer than mine and an easy hippy attitude to match. Originally from London he packed up his job in Dominoes, moved out to Brazil with his wife Debbie and they set the place up from scratch 4 years ago. Pretty impressive.
The place had a bar (we made use of the happy hour 70p Caprinhas!) and it was a really social place. We soon learnt that most people travelling want to save the world or work for an NGO. We also were asked by one girl do we think we will ever get brown? Tears were shed... It's a big surfing town so everyone is generally fit, toned and bronzed.
The town was really pretty with coloured houses. There were loads of great places to eat but Cafe Caramelo topped them all - amazing iced coffees and cakes (great brazillian food ...)We also had acai sorbets, supposedly a superfood and there is plenty of it to go around in Brazil.
Highlights of the trip included a boat trip to the jungle ending up at a waterfall Cachoeira da Cleandro. We went with a group from the hostel and all jumped in to the water, few dive bombs and a bit of go pro action.
I also (Rory didn't join) took up some yoga on the beach. All zen and perfect by the sea until a few bugs bit me and I realised I was not at one with nature. Still time to man up before the Amazon trip, here's hoping anyway.
In the evenings we went to a sunset point where most of the town comes together. A live band plays while the sun goes down, everyone chills, dances. It's all peace and love. These are the moments we'll definitely remember.
Next stop is further south to Porto Seguro and Arrial d'Adjuja for a couple of days as we make our way to Rio!
