We arrived in Cairns this afternoon. It was nice because we had a while to get ready this morning beause of people skydiving, so we did not have to rush around. It was only a couple hours drive to Cairns from Mission Beach. I managed to destroy my knees today when I got out of the bus in the middle of the road and ended up with road burn to both of them. They are now swollen and bruised and quite painful, but it was my own fault for being stupid! I jumped out and the back of my foot caught on the step and I hit the asphalt hard...really great, haha!
We are staying in a hostel here that is ok, but not great. I have to share a room with 2 German girls, so I am not impressed. We did get a voucher for a free drink here so that is a definite plus :-)
Laura and I walked over to the esplanade today and got massages from crazy Chinese ladies. It was kind of amusing, yet painful at the same time. I also got this cute little bracelt that I love for $10, which for Australia is a great deal! Everything here is sooooo expensive. I am still shocked some times by how much things cost. For me to get a soda and a chocolate bar is $8. Unbelievable!
Tomorrow we go out on a boat and spend the day at the reef. We are going to go snorkeling and will have the opportunity to go diving if we want, though I doubt I will do that. I am trying to save my money as much as I can. We also lose 6 people from our group and gain 4 new ones. Steffan, Manu, Jo, Alice, Zoe and Lucy all leave tomorrow and I have no idea who the new people joining the group are. Sarah said that they are 3 boys and 1 girl but that is all she knows.
I am not really sure what I think of Cairns. It is weird being in a real city again after having so many days and nights in small places. It seems like an ok place though. Kind of touristy, which isn't necessarily bad...I'm just not sure what to think of it.
Last night in Mission Beach we went out to this pub/club called Coconuts where one of the whitewater rafting guides was DJing....it was such a dive and then when it was time to go the rides we were meant to have were broken. That meant we all rode home in different vehicles. It was a little scary because I think a lot of them were trashed, but we all made it home safely so that's what counts.
We are leaving for Darwin the day after tomorrow. I think we are going to have 3 really long days of driving..like 12 hours each day, so that should be interesting. I am not sure if I will have internet access or not, but I'll be sure to update this is soon as I can.
