Dear all! Welcome to our first blog entry. We are currently sheltering from the rain (for the second night in a row!) in this delightful internet cafe in a tiny supermarket! So, from the beginning...We got rather excited on the Eurostar as it was the first time we had ever been on it. I think asking the nice Eurostar lady to take our picture outside the train may have give our excitement away! We arrived in Brussels at 8.00pm and had to find our way to our hotel, with me carrying more than my body weight on my back. I am not cut out for this backpacking lark. Definitely a first class traveller!!!!! After a ride on the metro we found our way to our hotel. Zoe caouldn't work out how to enter, though she was standing right by the doorbell!! The man came to the door, after she knocked on it, and siad in perfect English "Hello. You should ring the bell!" Zoe then replied "Do you speak English"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha!!! I  (Zoe) would just like to say at this point, Becca did not see the bell either and she didn't jump in and answer the mans "perfect English"!!! Anyway...the room was tiny and completely white, but looked amazing after carrying our rucksacks for what felt like forever. We dumped our stuff, and hit the town! After eventually finding our way to the main squre (in Belgian this is said " grotty market"!!!!) we found the street that my (Becca) grandpa recommended for restaurants. Oh, byt he way there was a really cool Jazz concert/marathon going on in the main square which we listened to briefly. Spoilt for choice, we went in the restaurant with the largest mussels selection. As Zoe like to say, on numerous occassions, "We have to have mussels in Brussels!" W had a great meal with a pint of Leffe, but had to move off the street and inside when the thunder storm hit us!! Zoe tempted fate by saying of course it wouldn't rain!!
We stayed in the restaurant for about 2 hours with the storm raging outside, before we made our way back to the hotel. Haviong got slightly lost, we arrived back slightly damp, but slept very well after our long day/evening!
This morning we got up bright and early (9am) and headed down to breakfast. To my relief it wasn't all ham and cheese and we managed to have something that resembled British breakfast time! After putting our backpacks back on, to my very loud moans, we fiund our way back to the station to book our train out of Brussels to Berlintonight. We then left our luggage in lockers and headed off to explore what Brussels has to offer...food (waffles and seafood and snails), drink (beer, hot chocolate), weeing boys in the street (a statue!!!), some pretty buildings and the EU parliament monstrosity!
The statue (Mannekin Pis?) however was fully dressed in a snazzy purple outfit. We did have fun however posing for photos with the stream of water landing on our heads!!! We then spent an hour in a cafe people watching in the main square before setting off for parliament, a rather ugly building! On the way there, we got caught up/trapped by 27,000 half marathon runners. At one point we though the only way out was to join them. You can imagine our joy!!! After a spot of WINDOW shopping we made our way back to the main square where we got a table and enjoyed the jazz concert going on, whilst eating snails and drinking beer!!! The weather got colder and it looked like it was going to rain, so we headed back to the restaurant street and just had the most yummy paella. We are now rather full though, but thought this would keep us going on our night train to Berlin.Â
That takes us up to now. We were on route to the train station when we discovered this Internet cafe, so thought we would kill time in here. Our train doesn't leave till 11.40, but we are slightly over excited about the prospect of sleeping in bunks on a train. We both have images of "Some Like It Hot" action! We hope we're not disappointed! We arrive in Berlin at 8 tomorrow morning, and as yet, we are not too sure on what we will do when we get there. This travelling lark is all very fun and spontaneous!!!!
We hope you are missing us already, and we shall updat eyou soon on our German antics. Don't worry, we won't mention the war (too much)!!!!!! We're staying safe, and will speak to you soon.
Lots of love,
Rebecca and Zoe
