Review of Freame Photographic Exhibition. Although Freame is acquainted with the work of Cartier-Bresson and Atget, this is not immediately obvious in his Trafalgar Square series or the more recent Camden series, in which the spatial considerations of buildings and skylines are sacrificed to the intrusive appearance of a smiling face, normally Freame's face. Nor has he learnt much from the English school of Brandt and Edwin Smith, where mist and shadow could accentuate the London mood of depression. Freame prefers to use these natural features of rain, fog and gloomy rooms merely as a backdrop to groups of laughing, drinking and dancing individuals with unusual dress sense. However Freame has taken a leaf from the New York school of Warhol with seriatum shots of collective activity, for example in his 'dancing on the kitchen bench' sequence, where mob mentality is given a life of its own. 'Ugly Beasts' owes something to Leibovitz's eighties work. The airport photographs lack consideration, or even a sense of direction. Some of the portraiture proves that Freame does at least know which way to train the lens, though this reviewer is unimpressed by shots where the main subject seems to be not the sitter but the glass of Stella Artois in their hand. All in all, a mixed bag. The funky car at Camden shows Freame thinking outside the square, while the best that can be said of some of the public hotel images is that he knows how to go with the flow.
